Kirill Garrievich Petrenko is a Russian-Austrian conductor, currently the Generalmusikdirektor (General Music Director) of the Bavarian State Opera, and the chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) in the 2019-2020 season, succeeding Sir Simon Rattle. Petrenko was born in Omsk, Russia to a violinist father and musicologist mother.

He is currently chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the principal conductor of the European Union Youth Orchestra .

He then studied at the St Petersburg Conservatoire and has also participated in masterclasses with such major figures as Ilya Musin, Mariss Jansons, and Yuri Temirkanov.
Kirill Petrenko was music director of opera houses in three cities, and opera has unquestionably been the focus of his work so far – although initially he had actually wanted to become a symphonic conductor.
